Class Teacher

Autumn 2

Christmas Musicians

In our class, all children have been learning to play the recorder and some children have also been learning to play extra instruments such as clarinets, flutes and the bassoon. On these instruments, they have been working really hard to learn some Christmas songs. Here is their performance of Jingle Bells!

Basketball

All children in Year 5 and 6 took part in some Basketball sessions with a coach this half term, practicing their passing, dribbling and shooting skills. From this, a team was chosen. Our team went to a competition against other schools from around the area and played really well, coming 3rd overall!

Yoga
We have been taking part in weekly yoga sessions with an instructor. These sessions promote mindfulness, flexibility, and overall well-being. The children have been thoroughly enjoying them!

Design and Technology
Our topic this half term is 'Frame Structures'. We first investigated existing frame structures such as climbing frames, bus shelters, tents and play dens. Children thought about the purpose of these structures, the user they were intended for, the materials they were made from and how they had been made strong and stable. Using this research, we used construction kits to make some frame structures and experiment with various ideas.

Autumn 1

In the Community
Year Five pupils visited St Mary's Convent Residential Home to meet up with the residents and enjoy some arts and crafts activities. It is during these visits that we see how caring and friendly our pupils really are. We can't wait to go back at Christmas time to sing some carols!

RE
In RE, we have been focusing on theological terms used by Christians to describe God; these include Loving, Eternal, Holy and Omnipotent. We spent an afternoon visiting St Ebba's to look for links to these theological terms.

Science
Our Science topic has been 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. We began by exploring reproduction in plants. To help us investigate this, we all took part in a lesson dissecting Alstroemeria flowers. We carefully cut up, examined and labelled the parts we could see!

We then started to look at reproduction of animals, comparing the life cycles of many animal groups including birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and the three different types of mammals. In our work on birds, we explored the parts that make up a chicken's egg. Children first used a magnifying glass to look closely at the shell before cracking them open to look at the inside. They each then drew and labelled a diagram of the egg, explaining the job of each part!
